The funny thing about inheriting items of sentimental value from family members is that there is always one person within the extended family who keeps track of who got what and who is prepared to hold that against people. It turns out that the author of this story, who was Eric's cousin, ended up squabbling with her mother over the jewelry case.
The author had been close to her grandmother, which explains why she ended up with the case. However, the mother believed that the contents of that case should always have been up for grabs for everyone in the family. Once the author and Miranda had their confrontation, a greater fight among family members sparked, one that we can't imagine will be easy to resolve.
